Gallery

A collection of photographs and illustrations, mostly from before 1920, of gardeners in action.  They show clearly what the gardeners are wearing – probably old, worn, versions of their normal everyday clothes.

Many people still wear old clothes today, so not much has changed.  A hundred years ago, clothes were constricting, heavy and difficult to clean.  Women’s clothing in particular was not very practical for gardening.  Modern clothes allow more flexibility and movement, but old jeans or track suit bottoms are not ideal for gardening.

Getting down and dirty in Genus gardening trousers and tops makes gardening so much more comfortable and enjoyable.

A special thanks to The Garden Museum who have given Genus permission to use photographs from their archive.
