Count the Painted Lady butterfly

Count the Painted Lady butterfly

It seems that we are heading for a mass influx of Painted Lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui) over the next few weeks.  Although we get these butterflies regularly during the summer months, every ten years, millions arrive in a mass migration.  About 11 million arrived in the UK last time this happened, and this year Butterfly Conservation is asking each of us to take part in the world's biggest butterfly count.

This begins today and runs until 11 August.  participants are encouraged to spot and record seventeen species of common butterfly, including the painted ladies.  You can submit sightings online or via the Big Butterfly Count app.

Another wonderful opportunity for gardeners to get involved in Citizen Science.
