Pretty in Pink

We’ve started spotting one of our favourite plants in several gardens recently.  Deservedly so.  Dianthus carthusianorum comes from Spain and other parts of Europe where it’s primarily a grassland species but makes a beautiful addition to a border as long as it’s not totally swamped by surrounding foliage.

Despite being introduced to England in the 16th century we’re surprised it’s still not widely grown.  With its wiry stems growing to just over two feet it is topped by stunning magenta coloured flowers.  There’s a paler variety ‘Rupert’s Pink’ which might appeal if magenta doesn’t fit into your scheme but what really makes it ‘pop’ in our garden is its neighbour, Salvia nemorosa in a dark purple/blue; a beautiful combination that our visitors love every time they see it.
