Caring for your waterproof trousers
Water-repellent outer fabric
The outer fabric is treated with DWR (durable water repellent), which makes rain bead and roll off rather than soak in. Our DWR is rated 80/20 — it stays 80% effective after 20 wash-and-dry cycles. Washing and tumble drying (or a low-temperature iron if no dryer's available) reactivates the treatment as it wears down. If laundering no longer restores it, aftermarket DWR treatments can retreat the garment.
Waterproof lining
Waterproofness comes from an inner lining laminated to a PU membrane — built this way to protect the membrane if the outer fabric snags on thorns or brambles. Kneeling or leaning on sharp objects can puncture it, letting water through in heavy rain or wet soil. Pinpointing a puncture for repair is difficult, but a wash-in DWR rejuvenation treatment can temporarily reduce water getting through. Wash, dry, or retreat as soon as you notice wetting-out or leaking.
Care
For ongoing care, we recommend the following products — please follow the manufacturer's instructions for best results.
- Nikwax Tech Wash
- Grangers Performance Wash
- Liquid Soap or Soap Flakes
Spot treatment or very heavily soiled clothing:
- Wash the garment first before reproofing so the dirt and oil don’t interfere with DWR application
- For particularly tricky stains, pre-wet the affected area, and use a soft brush (like a clean old toothbrush) with some of your chosen detergent on it to gently scrub the area before laundering
Retreatment:
- Nikwax TX Direct
- Grangers Clothing Repel
